Long Distance Runaround
Recall from last year’s review that Rick’s busy year wrapped up, freeing time and energy to help manage Kevin’s care AND enjoy some time off. Here’s a summary of some of the adventures for the year:
- Caribbean Cruise – Andrew and Rick’s trip to Eastern Europe had to be cancelled due to COVID. Andrew’s relocation to Miami gave Andrew a new idea – a cruise! The boys enjoyed a few days in San Juan, Puerto Rico before boarding the Valiant Lady to snorkel in Tortola, BVI, zipline in Guadeloupe, enjoy a day at the beach in Barbados, a hike in St. Lucia, sightseeing in Antigua and a final day at sea before flying back to Miami. WHAT an adventure!
- Southern Comfort – While Anita visited her Daddy in Georgia, Rick took the opportunity to paint 2 of our 3 bathrooms. Those updates were followed-up over the summer with repairs to our roof fascia.
- Panamanians – Rick and his dive buddy Ben returned to Panama City Beach, FL for a few days of wreck diving. They dove some familiar sites and had the chance to explore some new ones.
- Sainted – Andrew and Grace celebrated Will’s graduation in St. Croix with their Mother Tina. GREAT way to enjoy time away with family before transitioning to the working world. Will also enjoyed trips to Vegas with his girlfriend Ashley and a job-hunting trip to New York.
- Certifiable – Rick bit the study bullet this year, successfully achieving his Project Management Professional and ScrumMaster certifications.
- Innovate – A weekend visit to Owensboro, KY to meet new people and explore new ideas.
- Olympian – Andrew joined his girlfriend Rachel and her family for a trip to Paris to enjoy the sites, tastes and events of the 2024 Summer Olympics.
- Beta Eta Reunion – Rick’s annual pilgrimage to Cleveland to celebrate his brotherhood in Sigma Chi.
- Bay Beach – Rick joined Sally and the rest of her living siblings and spouses in Bay Beach, ON for a celebration of Schweglerhood. We enjoyed 2 days of sun, 2 days of wind and 2 days of rain with a full week of family and food!
- Rick and Kendra joined Kevin and Sally in Laguna Beach for a sibling reunion, we LOVE spending time together.
- Hurricamp – Rick attended Man Camp in the driving hurricane Helene rains with 3,000 other brave men to push beyond their physical limits and destroy spiritual comfort zones.
- Mountain Escape – Mia and Eric enjoyed their first vacation since wedding in 2020 in The Smokey Mountains.
- Final Chapter – We enjoyed a week in Sevierville at the Wyndham Resort before heading to Georgia for Christmas. It was a bittersweet trip as we ended our time-share contract. We married in Sevierville, honeymooned there and started our timeshare journey with Wyndham, expanding to include contracts in Pagosa Springs, CO, Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe. We look forward to the travel adventures that await us.
I’ve Seen All Good People
Trips to Laguna Beach show that Sally’s mobility has improved over 2023. She’s hung up her cane and made some smart changes (like using Instacart to deliver her groceries) to reduce risks. She continues to enjoy living in Bluebird Canyon and has a new sitting area to enjoy time outside.
Anita continued her kitty rescue efforts, using our basement as a foster home to help socialize/transition the forgotten outdoor community cats into loving indoor companions. Both she and Kendra took the weight “bull by the horns” and released enough weight using Optavia to show a SIGNIFICANT change – looking GREAT ladies!
Kevin has temporarily relocated to Cincinnati! Rick and Anita are looking forward to sharing the sights and tastes of Cincinnati with him.
Andrew’s enjoying life in Miami, working, supporting Rachel’s medical school schedule and enjoying time as a new dog Dad. Grace made a transition from Philly to Chicago to pursue her Masters in Precision Health at the University of Chicago. Will graduated from Virginia Tech with his Bachelor’s in Industrial Design. Then went to Boulder, CO for an internship, rejecting their offer for a full-time role and returning to Richmond for a new role as a Consumer Scientist at Haleon (makers of Advil). This is a 1-year role that offers a better opportunity to transition to Sarasota with his girlfriend Ashley after she graduates from Tech in 2025.
Mia and Anna are still enjoying life in Jacksonville. Clair Louise was born to Anna and her husband Jacoby in March. She’s healthy, happy and a JOY to all. Rick’s still yet to schedule a visit to start the spoiling of his GREAT Granddaughter, he’s looking forward to doing so in 2025. Mia’s working her way up the ladder as a Funder in the Auto Finance Department at TD Bank, while enjoying time as an Aunt.
Rick’s looking forward to a new role as a Product Owner/Project Manager with a new client, starting January 6th.
